The oils in both watches will have lost much of their viscosity and won't be working as they ought to. There seems little evidence of any damage so far, so I guess that these weren't worn that often, or that the person who did wear them didn't put much tension on the band. I think they'd look smarter, too, but that's just my own taste. There are hundreds of watches on eBay with lugs which have been chewed away, often right away, and so I'd think about taking these off and would look at a decent leather strap. These straps are really tough on the lugs, as the metal end tube acts like a cutter as the strap wiggles back and forth on your wrist. Easy to see why, they don't cost much.īoth watches pictured have been fitted with generic expandable straps. They can actually be repolished and would come up nicely in the right hands most watchmakers wouldn't put the time into this, but simply change it out and make a couple of easy bucks on the job. The ones you're showing here are simple acrylic ones, more or less unchanged now to the ones then, so no point to being too concerned on this aspect. In general, collectors don't appear to be too precious about replacing old watch crystals. The UG has a bit more value in it that the Bulova in the market. The best way to do that (display the thoughtfulness) is to go with a watch that can only be sought intentionally and not stumbled upon like a "mall brand. Both watches are worth servicing, I think. As such, I think there is a "cheapening" of the experience and those in the WIS community and thus they steer away from those brands they want it well known that their watch was a thoughtful purchase and they are different from the Average Joe who didn't really think about their purchase. With "mall watches" any Jo Schmo who hasn't spent more than a moment contemplating their watch can stroll into the store and pick the same watch that the Enthusiast just spent hours fretting over.

It's a watch purchased with intention and all the alternatives were carefully considered. All to finally decide that THIS is the watch for them. I would imagine that part of the appeal for some in the hobby is the careful consideration when it comes to picking a watch. /r/WatchExchange for buying, selling, trading watchesīanner photo courtesy of /u/northscylla Please take a look at our community rules and FAQ before contributing!Ĭompletely agree./r/WatchHorology our sister subreddit for horology, watch appreciation, history, technical discussion and related topics.Simple Questions and Recommendations ThreadĬome hang out in the Official /r/Watches Discord!
